In industry, methanol is usually continuously reacted with ammonia to produce methylamine in the presence of silicon aluminum catalysts such as alumina and silica alumina. The reaction is generally carried out in the gas phase under high pressure and a temperature range of 300-500 ℃. The distribution of reaction products such as monomethylamine, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine is close to thermodynamic equilibrium composition, with trimethylamine having the highest content and monomethylamine and dimethylamine having lower content.
